Du bruit au bruit, Meryam Benbachir

Works   •

How to escape the neutralization of a discourse? For the third programming cycle of Bruise Magazine in 2023, artist Meryam Benbachir presents 'From Noise to Noise,' a cryptic piece whose form allows the content to elude any attempt at appropriation. Punctuation, usually employed to make a text comprehensible, is here diverted from its primary function. By becoming the sole visible typographic character, it upends the power dynamics inherent in discourse and its circulation, becoming a tool of resistance against projections and instrumentalization to which it may be subjected.

Seemingly falling within the field of graphic poetry, the text exists solely under the conditions of enunciation and readability decided upon by the artist. By reducing punctuation to its most formal dimension, 'From Noise to Noise' anticipates the processes of appropriation of struggles at work in institutional narratives, offering an extremely stylized version that cannot be further annihilated. The signs hint at the rhythm of anger, and the spaces they punctuate organize themselves through a mimetic diversion of the silence of the contemporary art scene since October 7, 2023.
